Lucy loved being in the kitchen with her mom. Each weekend would see them don their aprons and spend time baking something scrumptious. They typically baked cakes with flour, sugar and eggs. Lucy would stir the mixture and see the batter turn smooth and creamy.
One Saturday morning Lucy and her mom came up with a big idea. They wanted to create a cake unlike those they had made previously. “But what if, in our cake, we use paper? Lucy asked with a big smile. Her mother thought it was a funny, silly idea.
They prepared all their ingredients. First came the flour into the giant mixing bowl. Then came sugar, eggs and little bits of paper. Lucy tore the paper to pieces, littering tiny shreds. Her mom used to help her sneak in some vanilla, and everything would smell so sweet and yummy.
Mixing the cake was fun! Lucy stirred the batter, and she observed the paper bits revolving. When her mom demonstrated how to wet the paper in advance so it wouldn’t burn in the oven, This was a crucial step to ensure their cake would be both safe and delicious.
After the cake was done, they opened the oven door. The cake looked magical! The paper left pretty little spots of color all throughout the cake. Lucy's eyes grew wide with excitement. "It looks so cool! " she said.
Lucy’s little brother had a birthday party that day. Everyone was surprised and happy to see the cake. "A box of cake? " they asked. Everyone wanted a sample of it. Everybody smiled at how sweet the cake was.
Lucy felt proud. So they had done something good for the earth by using paper that was going to be thrown away, she knew. Her mom said recycling can be a fun and creative activity. Lucy discovered that you can create something extraordinary from what most would call ordinary.
